Case Study: Molar Pregnancy

How sharp is your POCUS knowledge? Test it out and see if you can answer the question posed in the case study below.

The image below shows a typical case of molar pregnancy. A molar pregnancy could either be a complete or a partial molar pregnancy.

Which type of molar pregnancy has a lower risk of complications occurring during and after the molar pregnancy?

A. Partial molar pregnancy
B. Complete molar pregnancy
C. Both have equal risk of complications

A partial molar pregnancy has a lower risk of complications.

Explanation

The image shows a complete molar pregnancy. Studies have shown that a partial molar pregnancy carries a much lower risk of complication and post molar pregnancy gestation trophoblastic disease as compared to a complete molar pregnancy. However, both should be followed closely to watch for potential complications.
